When looking for facial cleansers, you want to pay attention to the ingredients. One that I try to steer clear of is sulfates because they can be too harsh on the skin.

If you’ve ever used a cleanser that left your skin feeling squeaky and tight, that means it’s not the best one for you.(4)

When you wash your face, your skin should feel smooth and comfortable. You’ll know when you have the perfect cleanser when your face still feels good after washing it.(5)

Since I have dry, sensitive skin, I look for cleansers that are gentle, moisturizing, and cream-based.(6)

Here are a few of my favorites:

Skin & Co Whipped Cleansing Cream
Skin & Co Face Gommage
Josie Maran Pineapple Enzyme Cleanser
Washing Your Face too Much
Washing your face once or twice per day is normal, however, it shouldn’t be done more than that.(7)

I know this mistake is more common for those  have oily skin. You may think that your face whowill become less oily the more you wash it, however, that’s not the case! (8)

The only thing over-cleansing will do is dry out your skin and cause it to produce more oil, which is the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve.

Stick to washing your face morning and night with a good-quality cleanser! (9)

Not Washing Your Hands Beforehand

Something as simple as washing your hands before touching your face will make a huge difference. (10)

To be honest, I used to jump right into my skincare routine a lot without thinking about where my hands have been.

Imagine how much dirt and bacteria you could transfer to your skin without knowing it! (11)

Start your routine off by washing your hands. We’re all out here trying to achieve healthy, clear skin! You won’t be able to do that if you’re always putting dirty hands on your face.

Using Hot Water

I know when the colder weather comes around, I always look forward to taking a nice, hot shower! You may think the temperature of your water wouldn’t be a huge deal, but it is. (12)

Not only does using hot water strip your skin of its moisture, but it can also cause your skin to produce more oil to combat the dryness. (13)

I love washing my face with lukewarm or cool water. Since my skin is already dry and sensitive, I don’t need to take any chances of irritation.

Even though the hot water may feel good, it can cause more harm. (14)

Not Doing a Thorough Cleanse

One of the last face washing mistakes to avoid is not doing it long enough or giving yourself a thorough cleanse. (15)

After doing some research, I learned that we’re supposed to wash our faces for at least 60 seconds. (16)

You want to give your cleanser enough time to break down and dissolve makeup, dirt, and oil that have accumulated on your skin throughout the day. Sometimes, using your fingers to cleanse isn’t good enough. (17)

One thing that I’ve added to my routine that has helped me wash my face effectively is the Pop Sonic 3 in 1 Exfoliating Cleanser.
It vibrates and has a variety of speeds to choose from that will help cleanse, exfoliate, and massage your skin. I love that it’s made out of silicone bristles and is perfect for sensitive skin. (18)

Using this tool has helped me start paying more attention to the spots I may normally miss while washing my face such as the jawline, hairline, and underneath the chin. It has a contoured tip that can help you reach those hard-to-clean areas. (19)

Avoiding these face washing mistakes will help you achieve healthier-looking skin and you can be confident that your skin will be left fresh and clean!

FAQ

How often should you wash your face?“Many believe that you need to only wash your face to remove makeup or when it looks dirty. In actuality, it’s recommended you wash your face twice daily,” says Dr. Jennifer Haley, a board-certified dermatologist from Scottsdale, Arizona. However, the amount of times you wash your face may be less.

Why does my face feel tight after washing? Some people like the “tight” feeling after washing their face, but it’s actually excess dryness, according to Dr. Ilyas. “Your skin can start to feel sensitive afterward, or even peel or crack. Applying moisturizer protects your skin from over drying.” If your skin continuously feels dry after washing, look into switching cleansers.

What should I use to clean my face?1 A mild, gentle cleanser, or two (if you wish to double cleanse) 2 A sonic cleansing brush, if you have oily skin 3 Antimicrobial cloth to dry face 4 Optional: micellar water for traveling and makeup removal.
